Rabies is a deadly viral disease that affects the nervous system and primarily spreads through bites and scratches of infected animals. Rabies can prove to be fatal if not treated before symptoms start.
There are two types of Rabies:
Furious Rabies – the most common type of Rabies characterised by hyperactivity, hydrophobia, aerophobia, seizures and ultimately death.
Paralytic Rabies – this type is characterised by progressive muscle paralysis, coma and eventually death. This form is also called Dumb Rabies as patients become weak and lethargic.

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)
This is administered after a suspected rabies exposure. The recommended dosage for PEP for unimmunised individuals is:
Rabies Vaccine
A total of 4 doses —0, 3, 7 and 21 days with 0 being the day of first dose
Human Rabies Immune Globulin (HRIG)
It is a shot that is administered near the site of animal bite as soon as possible, given at a dose of 20 IU/kg.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)
Individuals who are travelling to high risk areas or working with infected animals are recommended PrEP. The schedule involves 2 doses given on days 0 and 7 with a booster dose every 2-5 years.
